KernInst v2.0.1

Announcing KernInst v2.0.1: the dynamic kernel instrumentation toolkit. Release 2.0.1 is mostly a bug fix release to v2.0 (features shown below) . See the ERRATA for known bugs that have been fixed. Due to the severity of some of the bugs fixed, we strongly suggest that if you are currently using v2.0 that you upgrade to v2.0.1.

In addition to the bug fixes, release 2.0.1 for IA-32/Linux adds support for using the Intel Pentium 4 and Intel Xeon performance counters. The IA-32/Linux Kperfmon now also includes the ability to apply process-id predicates to metric-focuses for per-process measurements.

Highlights of new features and improvements in release 2.0 include:

  • Support for IA-32/Linux 2.4.x
  • Dynamic Kernel Instrumentation API Library (KerninstAPI) for ease in writing custom tools
  • Various bug fixes for SPARC/Solaris
  • Fully re-architected to separate architecture-dependent and independent functionality to aid in porting the tools to new platforms (e.g. a port to PowerPC/Linux is well underway)
  • Ability to compile tools using GNU 3.x compilers
  • Ability to export visualization data to a text file

This release supports the following configurations:

  • UltraSparc I, II or III (both 32- and 64-bit) / Solaris 7 or 8
  • IA-32 / Linux 2.4.x
  • Uni or Multiprocessor machines
